Winning pitcher: Berkley Potts: 25 batters, 6 hits, 5K’s, 0 BB, 2 E’s, 0ER

LP: H. Hensley

Leading hitters: Eady Beth Connally 2-3 with a 3B, Alisha Bridges 2-3, Avery Beason 2-2, 2RBI

“We made better adjustments at the plate and hit the ball. We have a few players in the zone and we want them to stay there. We still have some things to work on as far as base running and some little things on defense. Overall, an improvement and we hope to keep learning from our mistakes and not look back.”

The Darlington Tigers mauled the Sonoraville Phoenix, 57-20, in the season opener for both teams. Darlington set the tone on the game’s very first play, as Tev’n Hamilton returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown with 11:45 left in the first quarter.

The extra-point by Ben Davidson was good for a quick 7-0 lead for the Tigers.

9 SHS runners left on base

“We were given and had many opportunities to score; unfortunately no one was able to come through for us with these runners in scoring position. There are not a whole lot of teams that win a close game while leaving 9 runners on base. We continue to make little mistakes throughout the game. Our base runners are not getting the appropriate jumps off the bases and are not reacting when the ball is in play. Our defense made the routine plays today, but lacked the focus to effectively make tags on the bases and read the ball off the bat. We will continue to work hard and hopefully can learn from these mistakes in order to close the gap and string some wins together.”

The Sonoraville Lady Phoenix volleyball team turned in another outstanding team effort in defeating Pickens County 25-11 and 25-14.   Riding a 96% serve accuracy, led by Kelsey Cross (16/17) and Britney Eitutis (11/11), the Phoenix jumped out to early leads in both matches and cruised to victory.  Tori Ferguson registered an impressive all around effort that included 6 kills.  Eitutis and Kailey Vaughn added five and four kills respectively.  Jennilee Gentry and Kristi Vaughn each posted two blocks, and Jennifer Luna and Nikki Eitutis added strong defensive support.   The Phoenix record now stands at 10-1 heading into Saturday’s tournament action at Heritage High School in Catoosa County.

The Sonoraville volleyball team is gaining steam and gaining confidence with virtually every match they play.

The Lady Phoenix earned their latest impressive victory on Tuesday, when rolled past Dalton, 25-22, 25-12 in a non-area match.

Sonoraville is now 9-1 overall, representing the best start in the program’s history. The team’s only loss came against Forest Park at last weekend’s tournament in Rockmart.

“These girls are really starting to believe in themselves,” said Sonoraville head coach Nathan Smith. “Today’s win was a well-distributive effort, offensively and defensively.”

Britney Eituits finished with four kills, and Kailey Vaughn was 16-for-16 from the service line.

Sonoraville travels to Pickens on Thursday, and will then compete in the North Georgia Classic at Heritage this weekend.

The Lady Phoenix play Southeast Whitfield in the opening round of the tournament at noon on Saturday.
